The Basic Pilot Certification Pathway

If you’re brand-new to drones (or want to formalize your understanding), our Basic Pilot Certification gives you the foundation you need. It’s the right entry point before you move into higher-risk operations and which require a flight review.

Step 1: Free Online Course & Exam Preparation

RPAS Centre offers a free Basic Course, with video lessons created by commercial aviation pilots, practice quizzes, modules you complete at your own pace. It prepares you for the Transport Canada Basic Drone Pilot theoretical exam.

Step 2: Earn Your Certification

Once you complete the Basic Course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Achievement by email. This credential enhances your résumé and LinkedIn profile.

Step 3: Take the Transport Canada Basic Exam

When you’re ready to take the exam, log in to the Drone Management Portal and complete it virtually.

Step 4: What’s Next? – Advanced Pathways & THE Flight Review

Completing the Basic pathway is your launchpad. From here you’ll move into our Advanced Pilot Certification or Level 1 Complex Pilot Certification pathways. In those pathways you’ll prepare for, and ultimately book, your Advanced Flight Review, or Level 1 Complex Flight Review.

If you want to get certified faster, you can start directly in the Advanced Course — which we recommend. After all, why study twice when you can learn once?
