SFOC Now Required for Microdrones at Advertised Events!

SFOC Now Required for Microdrones at Advertised Events!

As of April 1st, 2025, Transport Canada introduced an important update that affects many drone pilots — even those flying the smallest drones. If you’re planning to operate microdrones at advertised events, you now need to secure a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC).

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s an “Advertised Event”?

The new rule applies to any outdoor event that’s been publicly promoted, which can include:

  • Local parades

  • Farmers or street markets

  • Amateur or pro sporting events

  • Community celebrations

  • Live music shows and festivals

If there’s a flyer, a Facebook post, or a mention on a website — that’s considered advertised.

Why Does This Matter for Microdrones?

Drones weighing less than 250 grams — also called sub-250g drones — have always had fewer restrictions under Canadian regulations. They’ve been a go-to choice for casual flyers and professionals who need something compact and lightweight.

But now, if you’re flying within 30 metres of one of these gatherings, you need formal authorization through an SFOC.

What the SFOC Process Involves

Getting an SFOC isn’t something you can leave to the last minute. You’ll need to:

  • Submit detailed safety documentation

  • Outline how your flight will be conducted safely

  • Apply well in advance of the event date

  • Pay a $75 application fee, starting November 2025

The SFOC review process ensures your drone operation doesn’t pose a risk to people, property, or other aircraft — especially in crowded spaces.

How to Apply

You can submit your application directly through Transport Canada’s official website:

Make sure to review the requirements carefully and give yourself enough time for processing — particularly if you’re working around a fixed event date.
